Questa lezione ti illustrerà le caratteristiche della “shopping-dipendenza”.

SHOP ‘TIL YOU DROP
(Fare acquisti fino allo sfinimento)

Sometimes people go shopping to cheer themselves up (tirarsi su il morale), but shopping can become an “addiction” (dipendenza)!

UK research suggests that “shopaholism” (dipendenza da shopping) is a real psychological condition that can have severe (gravi) consequences. Obsessive shoppers (acquirenti) share (condividono) the characteristics of people suffering from bulimia and alcoholism: low self-esteem, depression, and obsessive behaviour (comportamento).

Reasons for excessive shopping vary from wanting to keep up with (tenersi al passo con) friends or fashion to simply cheering oneself up. But dysfunctional shopping behaviour can easily get out of control. And with the easy availability (disponibilità) of credit cards, addicted shoppers soon run into serious debt (si indebitano).

Doctors in the US treat (curano) shopaholism with antidepressants, but not everyone is convinced that this is the answer.

Shopaholism is an insatiable need, not actually (in realtà) for the things themselves, but for what they represent. “Treating the symptoms is fine”, the experts say, “but what we really need to do is investigate the cause.”
