Hello everybody! Welcome to the EnglishBlog. In this podcast, you’ll be learning some survival English on the uses of the verb “have” and then you’ll be listening to a dialogue between two people utilising the different uses of “have.”
Before starting, let me first explain that the lesson is divided into two parts:
PART ONE: you’ll be learning the different uses of the verb “have”
PART TWO: you’ll be listening to an interesting conversation.
Let’s start!
Woman: I have got 1 brother and 1 sister. Or, I have 1 brother and 1 sister.
What is the difference? They both indicate possession, and the first is British English, and the second is used in American English.
Now listen to these examples:
Man: I have got a beautiful garden.
Man: Have you got brothers or sisters?
Man: I haven’t got brothers or sisters. I’m an only child.
Woman: I have lunch at 1.30pm.
In this example, have is an ordinary verb, meaning “to take” a meal, drink, shower, lesson etc. It is never followed by got, and obeys the rules of an ordinary verb.
For example:
Man: What time do you have lunch?
Woman: I have lunch at 1.30 p.m.
Man: I have an English lesson today.
Woman: I’m having a party.
This is another example of “have” as an ordinary verb. It means to “give” a party or to entertain guests. It also follows the rules of an ordinary verb, and is never followed by got.
Now listen to this example:
Woman: I’m having a party next Friday. Would you like to come?
Man: Are you having a fancy dress party again?
Woman: No, I’m having a birthday party.
Man: Oh I forgot, Congratulations! Of course I’ll be there.
Woman: I’m a police woman I have to wear a uniform for work.
If we add “to” to the verb “have,” the meaning changes completely, it is similar to “must” and indicates obligation.
Now listen to these examples :
Woman: Do you have to go to work tonight?
Man: Yes, I have to. You know I have to work shifts as a policeman.
Woman: I hate that uniform, do you have to wear it.
Man: Well I can get changed at work if you like, but I have to wear this uniform for my job.
Woman: Now let’s listen to these words in the following dialogue:
Woman: Hi, sorry I’m late, I had to finish a report, before I could leave the office.
Man: Don’t worry, I have ordered lunch for us, because I only have an hour’s lunch break.
Woman: Thank you. What are we having?
Man: We’re having “Today’s Special” – mixed seafood.
Woman: Sounds good.
Man: Did you have a good time at the party last night?
Woman: Well you know Sally, she always has good parties…I think that’s why I was behind with my work. I ate and drank too much.
Man: Do you have to do anything after lunch?
Woman: Yes, I have to find an anniversary present for my sister-in-law.
Man: You are always shopping.
Woman: I know. I’ve got such a big family, so it’s necessary.
Man: How long do you have for your lunch break today?
Woman: Three hours, so I’m having an English lesson also.
Woman: If you wish you can hear this lesson again. In the meantime we hope we have helped you to be more confident with your English. Watch out for the next topic. Thank you for using the EnglishBlog.
