Hello everybody! Welcome to the EnglishBlog. In this podcast, you’ll be learning some interesting survival English on clothes shopping.
Before starting, let me first explain that the lesson is divided into two parts:
PART ONE: you’ll be listening to some useful phrases you’ll then hear a short explanation of these words, followed by an example of how they are used.
PART TWO: you’ll be listening to someone trying to buy some clothes in a shop
So let’s start!
Woman: Now let’s learn some phrases that will help you to shop.
Woman: Can I help you?
Man: This is what a shop assistant will say to you, when you are walking around a shop. If you don’t want any help, you can say politely “I’m just looking.”
Now listen to an example of this phrase:
Woman: Can I help you?
Man: Not at the moment thank you, I’m just looking.
Woman: Can I try this pullover on please?
Man: “To try on” is a phrasal verb, it means to put a piece of clothing on, to see if it fits you properly.
For example:
Woman: Excuse me, could I try this jumper on please?
Man: Certainly. What size are you?
Woman: Well, I’m a 44 in Italy.
Man: So that’s a size 14 or medium in the UK. Here you are
Woman: Where are the changing rooms?
Man: This is where you go to try on the clothes you want, to ensure they fit you.
Man: Listen to this short conversation:
Woman: Excuse me, where are the changing rooms please?
Man: Over there.
Woman: Thank you.
Woman: A receipt.
Man: When you pay for any item in a shop, the assistant, will give you a piece of paper, with the item, amount and date on it. Don’t lose it as in the UK, if you return anything, you can get your money back, unless stated otherwise.
For example:
Woman: That will be £70 in total sir.
Man: Here you are.
Woman: Thank you, and here is your receipt.
Woman: Now listen to a man doing some clothes shopping for his son:
Woman: Hello, can I help you sir?
Man: Yes, please, I’m looking for a present for my son.
Woman: How old is he?
Man: 20. He is very difficult to buy for.
Woman: What about these pullovers, they are in fashion at the moment.
Man: Mmm, he’ll probably like one of those.
Woman: What size is he?
Man: Medium. But could I try it on, we are the same size.
Woman: Certainly, the changing rooms are over there.
Man: Perfect.
Woman: Do you want anything else?
Man: No thank you. I’ll just get this, How much is it?
Woman: £40, and here’s your receipt.
Woman: If you wish you can hear this lesson again. In the meantime we hope we have helped you to be more confident with your English. Watch out for the next topic. Thank you for using the EnglishBlog.
